Mahindra Bolero Neo: Why Neo when Bolero is Mahindra’s workhorse

NEW DELHI: Is it a Bolero or a TUV300? The Neo variant is basically a facelift of TUV300, which aims to reap the benefits by using the Bolero moniker.
Adopting the Bolero nameplate is no short of a double-edged sword. More than 20 years into the Indian market, Bolero’s popularity is largely undisputed. In this span, Mahindra has garnered over 1.3 million Bolero customers across the country. The company, however, is confident of the expansion of the Bolero family and its success.
Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, tweeted, “The Bolero not just runs in our veins but also in the veins of 1.3M people … Its family will grow and the legend will endure …” He also said he would like to add one to his garage.

Bolero, one of the oldest serving SUV nameplates in the country, is a well-appreciated product in the rural and semi-urban landscape. Its rough and tough appeal, durable capabilities and no non-sense design continue to charm its target audience. The homegrown carmaker aims to take the next big leap.
TUV300, on the other hand, made its debut in 2015 and was more focused on urban customers who have a knack for venturing in weekend trips and exploration activities.
TUV300, however, couldn’t impact the way the company desired, presumably due to lack of features, fierce competition and the existence of other similar-specced Mahindra SUVs in the same price range.

According to officials at a briefing ahead of media drives of Bolero Neo, the new product aims to capture the loyalists of Bolero and at the same time expand its footprint with state-of-the-art features.
Interestingly, Mahindra will field the Bolero alongside Bolero Neo and is expected to bring in Neo Plus edition in a while.
In terms of mechanicals, Bolero Neo inherits the 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, mHawk Diesel engine in BS6 guise from the phased out TUV300. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and power is sent out to the rear wheels.
Bolero Neo, priced between Rs 8.48 lakh and Rs Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), sits on Mahindra’s 3rd-gen chassis, which is shared with the likes of Thar and Scorpio. The N10 optional variant also gets multi-terrain technology, which avoids rear wheel locking in sticky situations.
