FACT CHECK: President Kovind bowed to his birthplace, not CM Yogi

An image of President Ram Nath Kovind touching his forehead in a bowed down position is being shared with the claim that he was bowing down to Uttar Pradesh (UP) chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
The photo shows Kovind stepping out of an aircraft and bowing down, while Yogi waits to receive him.

While many insinuated that Kovind was bowing down to Yogi as he belonged to an oppressed caste.

Some wondered why Kovind was bowing down at all.

The photo was taken at Kovind’s birthplace Paraunkh village in UP’s Kanpur district. President bowed to pay respects to his land of birth. He was not bowing down to Yogi.
Using reverse-image search, we found the original image posted on June 27, 2021 on the official Twitter handle of the President of India.

The photograph was captioned as ‘In a rare emotional gesture, after landing at the helipad near his village, Paraunkh of Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh, President Ram Nath Kovind bowed and touched the soil to pay obeisance to the land of his birth.’
Times of India reported about it on Jun 28, 2021 with several pictures from President’s visit to his native village.

Times Fact Check has found the claims of President Kovind bowing down to CM Yogi to be false. He was only paying homage to his birthplace. Presence of Yogi in the photo was only coincidental.
